| I'm just taking a break from cleaning my place...again. Yes, again. The Lead People are finally coming to check out the apartments to bid on fixing our windows. (Last week we had co-op people in to check and see if we cleaned our units--the cleaner the apartments, the lower the bid, see...)
Happily, my place really wasn't that bad in the first place, and just needed some fine-tuning. But I do still have to take down the Gothmas tree. But-but-but I don't wanna! I like the Gothmas tree! *sniffle* Humph...Maybe after my break and a snack I can tackle that particular skull-clad chore. If I can take out the recycling across the icy tundra and not die, I can take down the tree before bed... | comments: 4 comments or Leave a comment |
| I'm home from the Jade Mines, and it's so very, very freezy out there. On the way home I saw a bunch of kids sledding on the hill by the train-bridge. I'd love to grab some friends and join them, if it wasn't so miserably cold...
So instead I've got a big pot of green curry bubbling on the stove. That will definitely bring me back to warm:) And am I ever, ever glad I covered the draftier windows with some plastic--big, big difference, I tellya! I am a cosier, cosier Maus...
And after supper, I'll do other cosy things like bunneh-petting and spinning some very nice wool-angora mix I carded up the other day. This isn't a bad recipe for an evening:) | comments: 2 comments or Leave a comment |
| I haven't been posting for a few days--I was just not by the computer, or busy, or tired and not feeling so hot. The last few days have been very busy, so I'll sum up as best I can...
First off, it's the Queen of Stuff's birthday. Happy Birthday, Erin! We all gave her a surprise party last night, and it was a really wonderful time:)
My own birthday's looming up. People keep asking me what I want to do for it, and I really don't have a clue. Perhaps a nice bagel and lox and fruit brunch at my house with mimosas or something...
Matt and I went to see the Gaily-Waily's art opening at Altered Esthetics. The artwork was really superb stuff, really tops, and Gail was so happy to see us. Then we went off to the 331 club to hear Venus do her DJ stuff, and ate fabulous tacos. It was a great night out, even though it was getting bitterly, Minnesota-col by that point...
I talked to the Scraggits recently--Pa Scraggit's mother has stomach cancer and has three months to live. She's a nice lady who's always been kind to people, so it's hard to think of her as so very ill...
My spinning wheel, Hester, will have a little sister by the end of the week. I got to go to Detta's Spindle and tried out no less than 4 different modern, portable spinning wheels. I fell in love with the little Kiwi, and well...heh, it's coming to live with me at my house:)
I'm feeling exhausted and ragged and a bit ill, so I took a day off work today. I blame the extremely cold weather--a bunch of us were running around in it quite a bit yesterday, preparing for the fun surprise party. I'm glad I did--I slept until 11, which is something I never, ever do unless my reserves are completely tapped...so today, it's all easy stuff. Movies, bunny, spinning, cooking. Definitely a nap...
So there you are, and Happy New Year to everyone... | comments: Leave a comment |
| My brains are very tired. I have no thoughtmeats to think my thoughts with. It's been that kind of day...
I used my zombie-chef skills to make a nice, simple dinner to help me get my thinks back. If cheese sandwiches and shrimp soup doesn't save me, there's nothing left that will. Buhhhh... | comments: 3 comments or Leave a comment |
| I just got home a while ago after a lovely dinner at Holy Land. The co-op members prepping for the lead-abatement were in, and left me a nice note: "Thank you for the great job cleaning up for the lead people, and don't forget to clear out the deck-door for next week!" I didn't realize they were going to check that door--the deck isn't safe, and is scheduled for repairs, but that's cool--five minutes of rearranging will fix that...
I'm just oddly proud of my A minus in cleaning. Silly Maus... | comments: Leave a comment |
| Today's an exciting day in my world - today I ordered a new PC :) I've been looking forward to this moment for quite a while. The current PC is one that I got from my insurance company a while back and I didn't get any choice in what I got - it works OK mostly but there are enough niggles to make me want a new one. I was looking specifically for a PC with large screen and half-decent graphics card, not much else matters and 4GB RAM seems standard on modern laptops.
I've gone for an HP Pavilion dv7-2110sa (PC World - datasheet here from HP website) - it's a refurbished model from PC world but seems like a good enough price for a not bad machine. Liked the 17.5" screen and 512MB dedicated graphics RAM. Looking at the dv7-2200 range on HP's website, they sell for quite a lot more than this one's costing and there doesn't seem to be much difference.
I was kind-of surprised when they said that they would be delivering it on New Years Day! I did question this and they specifically said that they would be delivering that day. I've asked for the Monday afterwards because we should be at my parents' that weekend, and they won't delivery to another address, boooo.
It'll be quite satisfying to get it into my hands. Just a shame I couldn't pick it up :-\
Mmmmmm, geekery. | comments: Leave a comment |
| I woke up late, after a dream of being back in college. Late winter makes my dreams very intense, so it took me a while to de-haze my poor head and make it to work. Humph...
And after work, I'm doing some last-minute cleaning at the Maushaus for the lead-abatement people. The first round tomorrow is our co-op people checking the units to make sure they're ready. I'm a little anxious about all this because I usually keep Shamu's cage by the windows. I'll have to temporarily move him into the bedroom next week and hope the lead guys don't have to do too much. *fingers crossed.*
At least I had a good weekend of laziness for the most part, to prepare me for the puttering that is to come... | comments: 2 comments or Leave a comment |
| Christmas. A time for family, apparently. In our case, Jane and I went down to her parents' for Christmas, arriving Christmas Eve and leaving today. 3 days seems to be the optimal time to spend, before the arguments start and having Jane's mum out the way most of Christmas day is a blessing :)
I really shouldn't complain - we got some lovely presents. From Jane's parents (and my own) there was money, from Jane (another one) there was a painting of London Theatres (slightly ropey photo can be found here). It's brilliant :)
Also we got a bottle of Vodka, some cushions and a throw, some wine glasses, photo frames, a stylophone, bottles of wine, and more.
I got some Wii games, money as mentioned before, a rather brilliant book, and a promise of clothing from Jane.
Christmas eve we spent in the Punch Bowl in West Felton. It was pleasant but much quieter than I remember it being previously. We even managed to completely miss Jane's parents arriving, a feat neither of us thought would be possible.
Christmas day was spent doing not much, but the evening we had the usual crowd around, Jane's parents' friends and their kids (kids being our age). There was beer, good turkey, pudding of doom, wine, ginandtonnix, whisky and port, all followed by Wii boxing :)
On Boxing Day, Jane's parents went to the Shrewsbury Town match and we were left to ourselves, which was good because standing up was more trouble than I cared to think about, never mind walking anywhere.
This evening I cooked a chicken and have been tidying up as much as I can be arsed to, and looking at nw laptops. Tomorrow we need to put some work into it, do some proper tidying and sorting out of the paperwork. The dining room table has no room for anything unless it's on top of papers.
New laptop - I'm thinking about it. Well, I'm considering using the money my parents gave me (us) towards one. Looking at a budget of £500-ish and want something with decent (pref. separate) graphics card, large (17"+) screen, minimum 3GB RAM and not too fussed about HDD space - though 320GB is probably the smallest one should go for these days. I want something I can do good video full-screen on, and my current just doesn't cope well with it.
Current front-runner for me is The HP DV72110SA which is going for £399 a a refurbished product on PC World's web site, though am open to persuasion. | comments: Leave a comment |
| Today is another fairly blissful day of not much of anything to do. The Scraggits and I were going to get together, but the roads are too icy and awful. I kept having premonitions of Certain Doom, so we postponed the whole thing, and the premonition evaporated.
So I puttered around, petted and loved the Wee Orca. Shamu has a tiny pet-safe cardboard box with raisins in it. I stuck one halfway out to give him the idea, and he did sort of get the hang of wrenching that raisin out of the box, but didn't seem to get it that he was being encouraged to chew something. I guess I'm lucky that he's not much of a chewer; my books would be in pretty rough shape...
I just woke up from this wonderful nap, where I dreamed I was reading a book, on a soft plush black-and-red carpet. The carpet was on a beautiful beach of red sand, with a sand-sculptured Buddha-head rising from one of the dunes. The sun was setting over the water, and it was utterly peaceful. It was just what I needed, a nice little mind-vacation... | comments: Leave a comment |
| Even though I'm a little sleepy-eyed around the edges, I'm happy to have a nice holiday. Even though now it's apparently *raining* on top of the compact, dense snow. Ugh. At least one of my neighbors gave me the amazing present of shovelling, so maybe I can give it back later...
It's been kind of a tense holiday, though. There seems to be all kinds of frictions in my chosen family members, and it upsets me. The kind of thing where you don't really know what to do for it. So you fumble along as best you can, which usually isn't very good. Meh.
I think I need tea and some kind of hot bread with a something on it. Meanwhile, Merry X-mas, and may your presents be wonderful and full of goodness... | comments: 4 comments or Leave a comment |
